Dredging
The 1906 Alexandra Dock and later the Great Western Railways Act of 1916, applies to maintenance dredging of the main approach channel and is carried out via contractors, under the authority of the “Joint Channel Dredging Committee” (“J.C.D.C.”). The J.C.D.C. is represented by 3 representatives of the Commissioners together with 3 representatives of Associated British Ports. The Committee meets on a three monthly basis to review the dredging programme.
Private berth and dock owners are responsible for their own maintenance dredging and should inform Newport Harbour Commissioners that all the necessary authorisations are in place before commencement of operations.
From time to time, capital dredging schemes may be instigated to improve private berth facilities. Such schemes are authorised by Newport Harbour Commissioners providing all the other necessary authorisations are in place. Newport Harbour Commissioners do not contribute financially to such schemes.
DREDGING POLICY 1 – MAINTENANCE DREDGING
The Newport Harbour Commissioners recognises the need for maintenance dredging within active docks and berths. Newport Harbour Commissioners will support dredging regimes undertaken where necessary to maintain acceptable depths for the safety of commercial shipping within the Harbour.
DREDGING POLICY 2 – ROUTINE MAINTENANCE DREDGING
The Newport Harbour Commissioners will, if necessary, exercise their powers to undertake maintenance dredging of the main navigation channel within the Newport Harbour to acceptable and publicised depths.
DREDGING POLICY 3 – CAPITAL DREDGING
The Newport Harbour Commissioners will generally support proposals to improve facilities for shipping and increased trade through capital dredging.
